Natalie Marks, DVM, CVJ, CCFP, Elite FFCP-V, is an internationally renowned veterinarian, educational consultant, media expert, and angel investor. A practicing veterinarian for over 20 years, with 10 co-owning and running the largest small-animal practice in Chicago, Marks is dedicated to helping pet parents and veterinarians work as a team to ensure the health and happiness of our beloved furry family members.

Marks obtained her bachelor’s degree with high honors in animal science from the University of Illinois in 1998. Then, she obtained a master's in veterinary medicine and a DVM with high honors from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. Marks received the prestigious Dr Erwin Small First Decade Award, presented to a veterinarian who has contributed the most to organized veterinary medicine in his or her first decade of practice. In 2012, Marks was named Petplan’s nationally recognized Veterinarian of the Year. Additionally, she was awarded America’s Favorite Veterinarian by the American Veterinary Medical Foundation in 2015.

Marks is also very passionate about educating via all types of media, both locally and nationally. She has appeared on Good Day Chicago, WGN-Pet Central, NBC Morning News, ABC, CBS, NPR, WBBM, Northwestern University media channel, and many local websites. Marks was featured nationally on the Today Show and CBS Evening News during the canine influenza epidemic of 2015 and in multiple issues of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Marks is a regular columnist in Today's Veterinary Business, Healthy Pet magazine, and PetVet, and has been published in Veterinary Medicine magazine, dvm360 magazine, Dogster, and Vetted. She is on the advisory board for Health magazine and also was the host of numerous veterinary broadcasts for the Viticus Group (formerly WVC). She is a sought-after national and international lecturer at many veterinary conferences including our Fetch Conferences.

When Marks is not working, she treasures her time with her family and three wonderful children: Sophia, Evan, and Madeline. Marks loves traveling, scuba diving, cooking, and spending time anywhere outdoors!

Overview:

In this 1-hour RACE-approved lecture delivered in a game show format, attendees will start with a refresher on the pathophysiology around wound healing in dogs and cats. This will include both gross and microscopic descriptions. Attendees will then discuss different pain points around treating wounds. This moves into physical factors that impede wound healing (immune suppression, inflammation, etc.) and emotional components like stress and anxiety. Understanding what creates an ideal healing environment takes attendees towards an introduction to a new standard of wound care that considers our patients' physical and emotional health. The final section of the lecture will include case-based discussions with strategies for general and emergency practices around workflow implementation and client communication.

  • Attendees will review the four stages of wound healing.
  • Attendees will understand risk factors for slow wound healing.
  • Attendees will help differentiate the four different wound categories.
  • Attendees will learn about the four types of debridement and what makes a healthy granulation bed.
  • Attendees will be introduced to a new form of topical therapy for wound healing with an added bitterant.
