Urine Culture Shock! - Diagnosis and Treatment of UTI in Dogs and Cats

Overview:
Urinary tract infection is among one of the most common diseases faced by small animal practitioners. It can account for a significant proportion of antimicrobial use within in a practice; therefore, it is important to understand current recommendations regarding diagnosis and therapy of UTI. This lecture will review the basics of UTI and update the audience on some new recommendations. We will take a uropathogen centered approach to gain a better appreciation for the bacteria that cause UTI and the drugs that can kill them! A review of the results of a study entitled “Comparison of a Chromogenic Urine Culture Plate System (UTid+) and Conventional Urine Culture for Canine and Feline Specimens” will also be included.

- Distinguish between subclinical bacteriuria and UTI.
- Compare and contrast uropathogens of dogs and cats and use their identity to help guide empiric antimicrobial therapeutic decisions.
- Employ diagnostic results to optimize UTI antimicrobial therapy.

Dr. Stephen Cole is a veterinarian, board-certified clinical microbiologist and Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine. His scholarly interest include characterizing extensively drug resistant Gram negative bacteria of companion animals and development of antimicrobial stewardship educational tools. Stephen has received the Peggy Cotter Early Career Award from the American Society of Microbiology, Several Teaching and Mentoring Awards and has been named a One Health Scholar by the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges
