Overview:

Dermatologic cases, including skin and ear disease, make up a significant portion of a small animal veterinarian’s daily caseload. This session will explore a new and innovative way to obtain efficient cytology results for your everyday dermatology cases with the utilization of Vetscan Imagyst™. In this presentation, learn how deep learning AI can alleviate challenges surrounding workflow and the time it takes to read samples - while providing practitioners confidence in the accuracy of results for skin impression smears along with ear and skin swab cytologic smears.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain an understanding of the opportunity in veterinary practice to improve utilization of cytology with dermatology cases.
  • Understand the difference between superficial and deep learning AI and where this diagnostic capability fits within the veterinary hospital.

Cory D. Penn, DVM

Cory D. Penn, DVM

Dr. Cory Penn received his DVM from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine in following receiving his Bachelor of Science from Eastern Illinois University. Before joining Abaxis and Zoetis, Dr. Penn was a small animal veterinarian and medical director in central Illinois. He joined Abaxis Global Diagnostics in 2016 as a Professional Services Veterinarian for the Central and Western United States and after the acquisition of Abaxis, held the same role with Zoetis Diagnostics.

Dr. Penn is currently Senior Veterinary Diagnostic Platform Lead for VETSCAN IMAGYST with Zoetis Global Diagnostics. Dr. Penn currently resides in the Midwest US with his wife Emily, three daughters, Harper, Reese, and Charlotte; Labrador retriever, Chloe; and cats, Fluffy and Pinky. In his free time, Dr. Penn enjoys spending time with his family and being outdoors.

Kristin Owens, DVM, DACVP (Clinical Pathology)

Kristin Owens, DVM, DACVP (Clinical Pathology)

Kristin is originally from Pennsylvania and completed her DVM studies at North Carolina State University. After graduating, she returned to her home state for residency training in Clinical Pathology at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine, earning her board certification in 2015. Kristin worked within a specialty hospital as a diagnostic pathologist in a commercial diagnostics laboratory for 6 years before joining Zoetis in November 2021. She has a love of cytology, and a strong interest in the uses of artificial intelligence in veterinary medicine. She is an active member of both the ASVCP and ACVP, and recipient of the CL Davis Student Scholarship Award in 2014. She has peer reviewed publications on topics including neuroscience, behavior and trauma, and clinical pathology. Away from the microscope, Kristin enjoys spending time baking, traveling and volunteering at school events with her two children. Her pet family consists of two feisty kittens, a 17-year-old turtle, two guinea pigs, and assorted fish.

Shannon B. Sura, DVM, MBA

Dr. Shannon Sura is the diagnostics medical education lead in point-of-care platforms with Zoetis. She earned her DVM from Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, and her marketing focused MBA from Arizona State University’s W.P. Carry School of Business. She has more than 20 years of knowledge and experience having worked as an associate veterinarian, private practice owner, medical director, and a professional services veterinarian with various companies. Dr. Sura maintains her clinical connection when employed in industry by working as a relief veterinarian in both general practice and emergency medicine. Dr. Sura’s passion in practice is education that increases efficiency and proficiency within the hospital and promotes service marketing to help drive better value to increase uptake of gold standard recommendations.

Fred Wininger, VMD, MS, DACVIM (Neurology), originally from New Jersey, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania College of Veterinary Medicine. After completing a small animal rotating internship at the University of Georgia, he finished his neurology/neurosurgery residency at Washington State University. There he developed a love for neuroimaging and the development of a novel neuronavigation device. After joining the faculty at the University of Missouri, he applied these interests to develop therapies for both animals and children with the rare neurodegenerative disorder known as Batten disease (neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis) and was awarded the young investigator award by the Batten Disease Support & Research Association for his work. He then moved to St Louis, Missouri, where he practiced for several years and developed the first hybrid private practice/academic neurology residency program, which continues today.

He currently practices at Charlotte Animal Referral & Emergency in North Carolina. In addition to his clinical and teaching responsibilities, Wininger owns and operates 3D Veterinary Printing, LLC, which creates anatomic models and customized surgical tools to aid veterinary surgeons and neurosurgeons around the world. He also is the founding treasurer of the Veterinary Neurosurgical Society, an active member of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, and adjunct professor for the University of Missouri. In his spare time, Wininger enjoys scuba diving, endurance sports, and exploring new places through their food.
