Overview:

This webinar discusses the use of SGLT2 inhibitors in cats with diabetes mellitus. Recently, SGLT2 inhibitors have been approved by the FDA for use in diabetic cats and provide excellent glucose and clinical control with once-daily, oral administration. The mechanism of action, screening of potential patients, initiation of the medication, and appropriate monitoring procedures will be discussed.

Cynthia R. Ward, VMD, PhD, DACVIM

Dr. Cynthia Ward received her VMD and PhD degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. She completed residency training at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania in small animal internal medicine and a reproductive endocrinology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She was on faculty at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Georgia. Dr. Ward has been honored by numerous teaching awards and was named the Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Georgia. She achieved Emerita status in 2021. Dr. Ward is the founder and Director Emerita of the UGA Veterinary Diabetes Clinic. She has authored numerous journal articles, book chapters, and research abstracts. Dr. Ward is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (small animal internal medicine).

Moderator James R. Freeman

Dr. Freeman did his undergraduate work at the University of Arkansas and received his DVM degree in 1986 from Kansas State University. Following graduation, he served in the US Army Veterinary Corps for seven years with assignments in Arkansas, Germany and Texas. He left active duty in 1993 and joined a small animal practice in Cabot Arkansas.

In 1995, he accepted a position with Rhone Merieux, Inc. (and later Merial Limited) working in technical services, pharmacovigilance and regulatory affairs. In January of 2004, he moved into the role of field-based Technical Services Veterinarian in Field Veterinary Services. Throughout his career at Merial, Dr. Freeman has participated in the product launches of Immiticide, Frontline, Metacam, Previcox, Recombitek and PureVax vaccines, and NexGard. In January 2017, Dr. Freeman transitioned to Boehringer-Ingelheim Animal Health where he is currently a Sr. Professional Services Veterinarian assigned to the Atlanta District, which covers the northern third of Georgia and southeastern Tennessee.

Throughout his career in industry, Dr. Freeman maintained an active commission in the US Army Reserve and retired in 2006 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Dr. Freeman is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Association of Industry Veterinarians. In his spare time, Dr. Freeman enjoys spending time with his family, working as a part-time white water rafting guide, and indulging in a number of hobbies
