To Close or Not to Close–Options for Wound Closure

Overview:
This webinar will focus on different methods of wound closure once a wound is ready for this final step. It will begin with a brief review of wound healing physiology and anatomy. There will be a short overview of phases of wound healing and methods of manipulating the wound bed to your favor. Various treatment methods for wound closure will then be discussed including primary closure, second intention healing, secondary closure, skin grafting, and skin flaps. We will also discuss various topical products to assist in wound closure. There will be multiple case examples presented throughout the webinar.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand wound healing physiology and importance of multiple factors involved in wound healing, including those that can be manipulated to encourage success.
- Learn different types of wounds and the sequela of each as well as treatment options for each wound type.
- Evaluate definitive treatment for multiple types of wounds including different methods of closure.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of the engraftment process and how to create a skin graft.
- Recognize common skin flaps that can be used to help close wounds.
- Synthesize thought processes and decision making for treatment of multiple examples of challenging wounds.
Justin B. Ganjei, DVM, DACVS-SA
Dr. Justin Ganjei received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011. Following veterinary school he completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery and then an internship in small animal surgery. He then went on to complete a residency in small animal surgery with Veterinary Surgical Centers in Northern Virginia in 2016 and became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2017.
Dr. Ganjei performs a wide variety of both soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, but has a special interest in minimally invasive surgery, interventional radiology, and pain management. He is a strong advocate of advancing veterinary medicine to be able to offer the most up-to-date and highest quality of surgery and medicine while minimizing pain and complications. Dr. Ganjei performs numerous advanced laparoscopic and thoracoscopic procedures as well as a variety of non-invasive procedures using interventional radiology.
Dr. Ganjei regularly lectures at numerous national and international veterinary conferences and is a consultant for the Veterinary Information Network. He enjoys teaching and is an adjunct assistant professor of small animal surgery and minimally invasive surgery at his alma matter, the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. When not performing surgery or teaching Dr. Ganjei enjoys playing with his band, cooking, and spending time with his family.

He is also the proud dog dad to 4 dachshunds and believes no one should be deprived of the incredible human-animal bond.
