Tips and Pitfalls of Challenging Extractions and Their Complications

Overview:
We all have our problem teeth! Many textbooks and presentations only review relatively straight-forward approaches to the canine tooth but that doesn’t quite cover the really difficult ones. In this presentation we will review alternative approaches to the mandibular canine tooth, tips to avoid jaw fractures and how to deal with closure of maxillary molar sites - just to name a few. We will also look at how to deal with some of the common complications.

- Recognize situations in which jaw fracture may be likely and tips to avoid it
- Identify cases that may warrant referral
- Decipher and combine tips to avoid complications in their practice
Jason W. Soukup, DVM, DAVDC, OMFS
Jason Soukup, DVM, DAVDC, AVDC Founding Fellow (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery), is a Clinical Professor and Section Head of Dentistry and Oromaxillofacial Surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine. He received his DVM from Texas A&M University in 2002. After completing an internship, he spent 3 years in general practice before pursuing advanced training in dentistry and oromaxillofacial surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Soukup became a member of the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) in 2009 and an AVDC Founding Fellow in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2018. His clinical and research interests are dental biomechanics, oral and maxillofacial oncological surgery, and computer-aided surgery planning/virtual surgery.
