The Wave of the Future: In-Clinic PCR Diagnosis

Overview:

This course will provide background information on the difficulties of accurately diagnosing urinary tract infections with conventional technologies. Also, the course will provide background information on the rising threat of antimicrobial resistance. This will be followed by an overview of PCR and how genomic testing can be used by veterinarians to make rapid evidence-based decisions in the clinic by utilizing a new technology that rapidly screens for 10 common pathogens and 33 markers for antimicrobial resistance factors. Data will be presented on a prospective multi-center study using this new technology that involved processing urine samples collected from animals with suspected urinary tract infections.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will be reminded of the challenges of diagnosing UTIs using conventional technology.
  • Attendees will learn about the risk of antimicrobial resistance
  • Attendees may share with their fellow licensees about advances being made with rapid in clinic diagnostic tests that will change the way veterinarians practice medicine.

Jane Sykes BVSc (Hons), PhD, MBA, DACVIM (SAIM)

Dr. Sykes is the Executive Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis). For more than 20 years, Dr. Sykes has held numerous positions at UC Davis including Professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine (Infectious Diseases) and Chief Veterinary Medical Office and Associate Dean of Veterinary Medical Center Operations.

Her research focus is infectious diseases of dogs and cats, especially those of immunocompromised patients, fungal diseases, and bloodstream-associated bacterial infections. Previously, she served as the Associate Editor for the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine and is currently volunteering her time as the President for the American College of Veterinary Medicine (ACVIM).

Dr. Sykes hails from Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Sykes received her veterinary degree and PhD at the University of Melbourne and her MBA from the University of Georgia. She completed her residency at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Sykes is a Diplomate American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (SAIM) and has a California University Veterinarian Licensure. She is Board Certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Small Animal Internal Medicine). She is the recipient of numerous awards and author of many scientific publications.

Christman is a national thought leader, speaker, and author on practice management, social media, and rehabilitation, and coauthored, “Honey, Have You Squeezed the Dachshund? A Pet Owner’s Guide for Owners Who Are Terrified of IVDD”—a book on dogs with disabilities. He has been featured in multiple publications and appeared on various multimedia shows throughout the United States, sharing his expertise and passion on all things veterinary medicine.

As an avid social media influencer for animal health care, he has over 800,000 followers on TikTok and 53,000 followers on Instagram. He loves to engage with fellow pet parents and veterinary professionals across social media. Christman is an advocate of Pride VMC and Pawsibilities. He is also the proud dog dad to 4 dachshunds and believes no one should be deprived of the incredible human-animal bond.
