Simplifying or Mystifying? Testing for Cushing’s and Addison’s Disease

Overview:
Diagnostic testing for hypoadrenocorticism (Addison’s) and hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s) can be complicated, frustrating and inaccessible. In-clinic point of care cortisol and eACTH blood testing is available to simplify the diagnosis of these conditions allowing initiation of timely treatment.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify clinical signs and laboratory findings in typical and atypical hypoadrenocorticism in dogs.
- Identify clinical signs and laboratory findings in pituitary- dependent and adrenal-dependent hyperadrenocorticism in dogs.
- Understand the use of cortisol and endogenous ACTH in the diagnosis of canine hypoadrenocorticism.
- Understand the use of cortisol, endogenous ACTH and/or adrenal ultrasound to differentiate pituitary-dependent vs. adrenal-dependent causes of canine hyperadrenocorticism.

Gary P. Oswald, DVM, MS, DACVIM (SAIM), is a board-certified specialist in the field of veterinary internal medicine. Oswald is a Cleveland, Ohio, native and received his BS and DVM degrees from The Ohio State University. He interned at Oradell Animal Hospital in New Jersey and completed his medical residency and MS in internal medicine at Colorado State University. The author of multiple veterinary articles, he presents continuing education lecture series throughout the United States, the Caribbean, and Central America. He has been in private specialty practice since 1991 and is the department head of internal medicine and department cohead of emergency services at Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Care Center in Florida. He evaluates patients with internal medicine, cardiopulmonary, oncology, and emergency problems.
