Overview:

This program will cover common myths related to parasites and their prevention and treatment in dogs and cats. Discussion will include common misconceptions, hurdles to compliance, updates on prevalence, and the impact of parasites persisting post-treatment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify misconceptions related to patient lifestyle and parasite risks.
  • Review common parasites of concern and understand emerging parasitic concerns, including zoonoses when relevant.
  • Create a team-based approach to parasite conversations and prevention.
  • Recognize parasites for which drug-resistance is a concern and how to identify and manage those cases.

Lindsay A. Starkey, DVM, PhD, DACVM (Parasit)

Dr. Starkey is an Associate Professor at Oklahoma State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She earned her BS (2007) in Animal Science from the University of Arkansas. She completed both her DVM (2011) and PhD (2015) in Veterinary Biomedical Sciences at Oklahoma State University where her graduate research focused on several vector-borne infections of dogs. She is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Microbiology, Parasitology sub-specialty, completing her residency training through the National Center for Veterinary Parasitology at Oklahoma State University in 2015. She is involved in various research projects involving vectors and vector-borne pathogens, diagnostic parasitology, and parasite consultation and outreach. Dr. Starkey also is heavily involved in the teaching of parasitology to second and fourth-year veterinary students and currently serves as a co-director for the National Center for Veterinary Parasitology, editor and board member for the American Heartworm Society, and president-elect of the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists.
