Principles of Dental Extractions in Dogs and Cats

Overview:
Learn the principles required to properly extract teeth using tried-and-true techniques. This presentation will assume a mucogingival flap has successfully been implemented and will focus on adequate bone removal/exposure, sectioning techniques, elevation principles, alveoloplasty and tension-free closure.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize the amount of bone removal required for specific teeth
- Identify individual roots of multirooted teeth and where to section
- Decipher and combine individual steps into a comprehensive surgical extraction technique
Jason W. Soukup, DVM, DAVDC, OMFS
Jason Soukup, DVM, DAVDC, AVDC Founding Fellow (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery), is a Clinical Professor and Section Head of Dentistry and Oromaxillofacial Surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine. He received his DVM from Texas A&M University in 2002. After completing an internship, he spent 3 years in general practice before pursuing advanced training in dentistry and oromaxillofacial surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Soukup became a member of the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) in 2009 and an AVDC Founding Fellow in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2018. His clinical and research interests are dental biomechanics, oral and maxillofacial oncological surgery, and computer-aided surgery planning/virtual surgery.
This program has been approved for 1.0 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions that recognize RACE approval.
