Practical Ophthalmology–Identifying and Managing Frequent Adnexal Problems

Overview:

    Diagnosis and management of adnexal issues will be discussed including conformational problems (entropion, ectropion, macropalpebral fissure), hair and eyelash disorders (trichiasis, distichiasis, ectopic cilia), eyelid masses, eyelid trauma, and third eyelid disorders (gland prolapse, everted cartilage).

    Key Learning Objectives:

    • Identify conformational problems in dogs and cats
    • Assess hair/eyelash disorders in dogs
    • Consider management strategies for eyelid masses and eyelid trauma across species
    • Recognize and address third eyelid issues in dogs and cats
    Rachel Allbaugh, DVM, MS, DACVO

    Rachel Allbaugh, DVM, MS, DACVO

    Rachel Allbaugh, DVM, MS, DACVO, is a professor at Iowa State University in Ames. She is originally from Waterloo, Iowa, and received her BS and DVM degrees from Iowa State University in 2000 and 2004, respectively. After earning her DVM, she completed a private practice internship in North Carolina and a veterinary ophthalmology residency and master’s degree at Kansas State University in Manhattan, achieving board certification in 2008. She was an assistant professor in the Kansas State University Department of Clinical Sciences from 2008 to 2011. In 2011 she returned to Iowa and is now a professor in Iowa State University's Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, the Lora and Russ Talbot Endowed Professor in Veterinary Medicine, and the Associate Chair for Culture, Inclusion, and Diversity. Her passion for veterinary ophthalmology began with her childhood cat’s nearly blinding eye disease. Since that time, she has been devoted to the field, enjoying clinical practice, teaching, and research. She also helps to serve the profession through active participation and leadership roles in numerous professional organizations. Her efforts over the years have resulted in numerous awards, including the Iowa State University Alumni Association Outstanding Faculty/Staff Inspiration Award (2022) and Young Alumni Award (2016), the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine Faculty Member of the Year Award (2015), and Kansas State University’s Mortar Board Honor Society Outstanding K-State Faculty Recognition (2010). In her free time, Allbaugh loves spending time with her family and friends, as well as riding her horses, playing sports, hiking, and any other outdoor activity.

    Dr. Welser joined CityVet in May, 2023 and serves in the role of Chief Strategy Officer. She brings a wealth of experience, having previously served as the Global Chief Medical Officer at Mars Veterinary Health. She also served clinically and in senior leadership at BluePearl Veterinary Partners, founded Veterinary Eye Specialists, and has worked in a variety of clinical roles as a boarded veterinary ophthalmologist. Dr. Welser also successfully licensed and sold a therapeutic nutritional supplement to a global veterinary pharmaceutical company. Her educational background includes a BA in Biology and French from the University of Vermont and a DVM from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

    Dr. Welser joined CityVet because she believes deeply in the culture and the unique shared ownership model with a support system.     Dr. Welser is based in Dallas with her partner, Andrew, and their four dogs.
