Ocular Emergencies

Overview:
This presentation will be an in-depth discussion of true ophthalmic emergencies along with identification, appropriate diagnostics, and treatment options.
Key Learning Objectives:
- To identify and correctly treat a traumatic proptosis
- To identify and correctly treat an anterior lens luxation
- To identify an infected corneal ulcer and perform appropriate diagnostics/treatments.
- To identify primary glaucoma and treat primary glaucoma appropriately
- To identify eyelid laceration and to repair laceration appropriately
- To identify corneal foreign bodies and/or corneal perforations and confidently determine next appropriate steps
Melissa Kubai, DVM, MS, DACVO
Dr. Kubai was born and raised in Wisconsin. She attended undergraduate at Ripon College, where she majored in Biology and German and participated in varsity college soccer. She attended veterinary school at University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she began to develop a love of ophthalmology. Dr. Kubai completed a small animal rotating internship at Michigan Veterinary Specialist, followed by an ophthalmology specialty internship at Louisiana State University and completed her 3-year comparative ophthalmology residency at University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana. For the past 7 years, she has worked in a private specialty practice in Tucson, AZ. Dr. Kubai joined the ophthalmology service at Iowa State University in April 2021 and was happy to get back to her Midwest roots. Dr. Kubai is an avid cyclist, participates in triathlons, and enjoys a multitude of water sports (swimming, kayaking, fishing, paddle boarding, etc.). She also loves gardening and confesses that she has a slight obsession with orchids.
Adam Christman, DVM, MBA

A Pet Owner’s Guide for Owners Who Are Terrified of IVDD”—a book on dogs with disabilities. He has been featured in multiple publications and appeared on various multimedia shows throughout the United States, sharing his expertise and passion on all things veterinary medicine.
As an avid social media influencer for animal health care, he has over 800,000 followers on TikTok and 53,000 followers on Instagram. He loves to engage with fellow pet parents and veterinary professionals across social media. Christman is an advocate of Pride VMC and Pawsibilities. He is also the proud dog dad to 4 dachshunds and believes no one should be deprived of the incredible human-animal bond.
