Overview:

Properly managing a diabetic pet is often regarded as a complicated experience for veterinary clinics, and an overwhelming experience for pet owners. As the prevalence of diabetes in pets increases over time, it becomes more important to understand the basics of monitoring, the available options, and benefits and limitations of each option in order to provide optimal care for diabetic pets. This podcast will review the highlights of monitoring diabetes in cats and dogs and focus on current recommendations based on guidelines from veterinary organizations.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review a high-level overview of the current recommendation of monitoring diabetes in pets, including the goals of therapy, and practical ways of achieving those goals. 
  • Learn the methods that are available for monitoring diabetic pets and when these methods should be considered. 
  • Understand the indications for performing blood glucose curves, the benefits of home glucose monitoring, and newer tools available to both clinics and pet owners that help obtain relevant information without overwhelming either group.

        Born and raised in New York City, Dr. Wilson received her BA from the University of Pennsylvania and DVM from Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Wilson completed a one-year small animal internship at the University of Tennessee. She practiced in the greater New York City area for 11 years prior to entering the veterinary pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Wilson is currently the Global Diagnostics Medical Lead for AlphaTRAK and Rapid Tests.
