Microbiology: A New Culture

Overview:
This course will review the clinical importance of appropriate microbiology testing. Infectious Disease Society of America standards will be reviewed along with discussing best practices for microbiology sample submission based on sample type (urine, tissue, fluid, etc). Antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods will be reviewed and compared along with the importance of antimicrobial stewardship in veterinary medicine.
Learning Objectives:
- Explain the Infectious Disease Society of America standards of care for microbiology
- Understand the importance of proper specimen collection and handling for accurate microbiology results
- Compare and contrast the different microbiology requirements for various sample types including urine, skin samples, tissue, blood, fungal cultures, and anaerobic cultures.
- Explain the relationship between minimum inhibitory concentration and clinical breakpoint for antibiotics
- Recognize the importance of antimicrobial stewardship in veterinary medicine
Shelly Rankin, PhD (Molecular Epidemiology)
Dr. Rankin obtained her PhD in Molecular Epidemiology from the University of Glasgow in Scotland. She was the Chief of Clinical Microbiology for the Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory System on Penn Vet’s New Bolton Center Campus from 2006-2013 and the Head of Diagnostic Services and Chief of Clinical Microbiology at Penn Vet’s Ryan Veterinary Hospital from 2013-2021. Dr. Rankin has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers, co-authored numerous guidelines on antimicrobial use, and written multiple chapters on the diagnosis of infectious diseases in animals. Dr. Rankin joined Zoetis in 2021 as Director of Microbiology and Molecular Diagnostics.
Moderator: Fred Wininger, VMD, MS, DACVIM (Neurology)
Fred Wininger, VMD, MS, DACVIM (Neurology), originally from New Jersey, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania College of Veterinary Medicine. After completing a small animal rotating internship at the University of Georgia, he finished his neurology/neurosurgery residency at Washington State University. There he developed a love for neuroimaging and the development of a novel neuronavigation device. After joining the faculty at the University of Missouri, he applied these interests to develop therapies for both animals and children with the rare neurodegenerative disorder known as Batten disease (neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis) and was awarded the young investigator award by the Batten Disease Support & Research Association for his work. He then moved to St Louis, Missouri, where he practiced for several years and developed the first hybrid private practice/academic neurology residency program, which continues today.
He currently practices at Charlotte Animal Referral & Emergency in North Carolina. In addition to his clinical and teaching responsibilities, Wininger owns and operates 3D Veterinary Printing, LLC, which creates anatomic models and customized surgical tools to aid veterinary surgeons and neurosurgeons around the world. He also is the founding treasurer of the Veterinary Neurosurgical Society, an active member of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, and adjunct professor for the University of Missouri. In his spare time, Wininger enjoys scuba diving, endurance sports, and exploring new places through their food.
