Let's Talk Smart Topical Therapy, Why Antibiotic Resistance Matters

0.5 CE Credit Hour / Veterinarians & Veterinary Technicians

Overview:

This discussion will cover the effectiveness and critical importance of adopting a comprehensive approach to managing pyoderma, a very common problem in veterinary dermatology, particularly in canine patients, focusing on reducing reliance on systemic antibiotics and leveraging the benefits of topical therapy and other alternatives. Through concerted efforts and informed decision-making, veterinarians can contribute to preserving the effectiveness of antibiotics and safeguarding the health and well-being of animals and humans in one health approach.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how topical therapy can be a successful alternative substitute to systemic antibiotic use in most superficial pyoderma in the canine patient and other species, and how to work with pet parents to educate and motivate them so this tool is effective.
  • Examine real-life experiences with successful topical therapy tools to avoid unnecessary systemic antibiotic use and how to make appropriate choices in managing pruritus and inflammation in most canine patients, even with generalized pyoderma. Breaking with long-standing therapeutic habits.
  • Understand how and when to employ topical therapy in canine pyoderma and other dermatological secondary infections successfully.
  • Apply useful strategies to promote the correct use of topical alternatives for the pet owner.
  • Evaluate the patient’s individual need for concomitant therapies to help increase success when using topical therapies substituting systemic antibiotic use
