Implementing Appropriate Topical Therapy Into the Multimodal Approach of your Allergic Patients

0.5 CE Credit Hour / Veterinarians & Veterinary Technicians

Overview;

Topical therapies have always played a large role in dermatology because of the easy access to the affected organ. With the increasing prevalence of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus spp. and multi-drug resistant bacteria, the importance of using antibacterial topical products cannot be overemphasized. Even if there is not active pyoderma, a medicated shampoo is recommended to improve the epidermal barrier and reduce allergens trapped in the coat. Using topical therapies can reduce the use of systemic drugs, the incidence of drug reactions, and can be less expensive than systemic drugs in many cases.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review of the skin barrier and its role in protection for the animal
  • Discussion of multimodal therapy in management of allergic dermatitis
  • Overview of various epidermal barrier topical products for maintenance
  • Discussion of topical management of recurrent pyoderma and yeast dermatitis
