How the Regulatory Guidelines for Virtual Care are Evolving Post Pandemic

Overview:
This program will look at how the regulatory framework guiding how veterinarians practice teletriage, telehealth and telemedicine based on where they practice veterinary medicine has shifted, plateaued, and evolved as the industry begins to move past the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand which regulatory bodies are prioritized when considering logistical and legal boundaries for practicing virtual care
- Understand how industry stakeholders navigated regulatory boundaries and developed different models for the application of virtual care throughout the pandemic
- Understand key considerations for practicing virtual care in a post-pandemic world as regulatory bodies begin to establish less temporary, more concrete position statements on teletriage, telehealth and telemedicine
Sarah Machell Bsc, DVM
Sarah is a ’97 graduate of the Ontario Veterinary College. Following graduation she established and operated a small animal practice in Oakville Ontario from 2000-2018. She has been practicing telemedicine since 2018, joined Vetster as their Medical director in 2020 and in 2021 established Westover Virtual Veterinary Care Services (a CVO accredited facility). Sarah is enthusiastic about the progressive career avenues that virtual care practitioners are able explore in an industry not generally known to have flexibility in working location. Sarah is equally as passionate about the ability of virtual care to improve access to veterinary medical care for millions of pets and pet parents who lack the ability to connect through traditional channels.
Jo Myers, BSc, DVM
Jo Myers earned her DVM from Iowa State University in 1994 after graduating from Johns Hopkins University in 1989. She has many years of experience in emergency medicine and has owned an AAHA-accredited practice for the past 15 years. Her interests include dermatology, allergy issues, and end-of-life care. She is currently a Vetster partner, providing telehealth consultations for patients in Colorado and Iowa. Myers lives in the High Rockies of Colorado and is a passionate outdoorsperson.
Fred Wininger, VMD, MS, DACVIM (Neurology)
Fred Wininger, VMD, MS, DACVIM (Neurology), originally from New Jersey, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania College of Veterinary Medicine. After completing a small animal rotating internship at the University of Georgia, he finished his neurology/neurosurgery residency at Washington State University. There he developed a love for neuroimaging and the development of a novel neuronavigation device. After joining the faculty at the University of Missouri, he applied these interests to develop therapies for both animals and children with the rare neurodegenerative disorder known as Batten disease (neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis) and was awarded the young investigator award by the Batten Disease Support & Research Association for his work. He then moved to St Louis, Missouri, where he practiced for several years and developed the first hybrid private practice/academic neurology residency program, which continues today.
He currently practices at Charlotte Animal Referral & Emergency in North Carolina. In addition to his clinical and teaching responsibilities, Wininger owns and operates 3D Veterinary Printing, LLC, which creates anatomic models and customized surgical tools to aid veterinary surgeons and neurosurgeons around the world. He also is the founding treasurer of the Veterinary Neurosurgical Society, an active member of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, and adjunct professor for the University of Missouri. In his spare time, Wininger enjoys scuba diving, endurance sports, and exploring new places through their food.
