This collaborative session will delve into the science and practical applications of laser therapy for dogs and horses. Key topics include laser therapy’s efficacy in pain relief, inflammation reduction, arthritis management, and tissue healing. Learn how this noninvasive modality can enhance patient outcomes, improve mobility, and elevate quality of life for canine and equine patients. Discover cutting-edge protocols, case studies, and evidence-based insights from 2 leading experts in their respective fields. Don’t miss this opportunity to advance your practice with innovative therapeutic approaches.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the fundamental physiological mechanisms by which laser therapy modulates pain, inflammation, tissue healing, and mobility in veterinary patients.
  • Differentiate evidence-based protocols and best practice guidelines for implementing laser therapy in canine and equine populations, including dosage, frequency, indications, and contraindications.
  • Evaluate case studies from small animal and large animal rehabilitation settings to identify key decision points, outcomes, and integration of laser therapy into multimodal treatment plans.
  • Discuss barriers, myths, and practical considerations when adopting laser therapy in veterinary practice—such as cost, training, workflow, and client communication—and develop strategies to overcome them.
  • Design a patient-specific plan that incorporates laser therapy for pain relief, inflammation reduction, arthritis management, or tissue healing in either a canine or equine patient, demonstrating improved mobility, quality of life, and client outcomes.

    Tom Walsh, DVM

After working years as a vet, Dr Tom Walsh found his niche--small animal rehab. He first established PrimePet Rehab, a mobile small animal rehabilitation and physical therapy service that treats animals at a number of veterinary clinics. Today, he has 5000 square ft and sees 30 dogs a day. Therapeutic laser is integral to his practice and is used daily to provide inflammation and pain reduction and to speed healing times. Dr Walsh started using laser for post-op, IVDD recovery and trauma. He saw recovery for back surgery reduced from 4-6 weeks to less than half the time. Improvement in recovery time made a big difference for owners going through a traumatic event with their pets and helped the animals relax as well. After seeing the results he got from his early work with laser, Dr Walsh expanded the scope of conditions he treats and often uses it in combination with other treatment modalities with great results.
