Flap Design for Dental Extractions and Periodontal Surgery

Overview:
The surgical approach to most extractions and periodontal procedures begin with a mucogingival flap. In this presentation we will review flap design options and provide tips to help the general practitioner choose the best approach. Principles covered can be applied to more advanced oral surgical procedures.
Learning Objectives:
Define and comprehend how to combine vertical and horizontal releasing incisions to form various mucogingival flaps
Compare various mucogingival flaps in order to correctly apply them to unique oral surgical procedures
Jason W. Soukup, DVM, DAVDC, OMFS
Jason Soukup, DVM, DAVDC, AVDC Founding Fellow (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery), is a Clinical Professor and Section Head of Dentistry and Oromaxillofacial Surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine. He received his DVM from Texas A&M University in 2002. After completing an internship, he spent 3 years in general practice before pursuing advanced training in dentistry and oromaxillofacial surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Soukup became a member of the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) in 2009 and an AVDC Founding Fellow in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2018. His clinical and research interests are dental biomechanics, oral and maxillofacial oncological surgery, and computer-aided surgery planning/virtual surgery.
