Effective Cardiac Auscultation: What are You Hearing?

Overview:
More than just an emblem of a medical professional, the stethoscope offers a path to identifying many cardiac and respiratory diseases. This session challenges the audience to gain more information from cardiac and thoracic auscultation by combining practical knowledge with efficient use of the stethoscope. Approaches for conducting the examination and for understanding auscultatory findings are emphasized, including differential diagnoses and recommended follow-up testing. The lecture is supplemented with a series of recorded heart and breath sounds. Please note that this presentation requires participants to have desktop computer speakers with a subwoofer or high-quality earbuds or headphones that offer sufficient bass response.

- Describe and demonstrate an approach to effective cardiac and thoracic auscultation.
- Categorize the abnormal heart sounds and explain their clinical relevance.
- Recognize the normal and abnormal heart and breath sounds played during the learning session.

John Bonagura is a graduate of the Ohio State University. He completed a rotating internship at the Animal Medical Center and residencies and board certifications in Cardiology and Internal Medicine at Ohio State. John was head of Cardiology & Interventional Medicine at OSU for most of his career and is currently Professor Emeritus. Dr. Bonagura was visiting research fellow at Edinburgh University (Scotland) and the Gilbreath-McLorn Endowed Professor of Cardiology of the University of Missouri (1996) before rejoining the faculty at Ohio State in 2001. Since 2019, he has been affiliated with North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. John has served as President of the ACVIM specialty of Cardiology. He is the long-time Editor of Kirk's Current Veterinary Therapy and co-author of a Colour Atlas of Veterinary Cardiology and Cardiovascular Diseases in Companion Animals. Dr. Bonagura serves presently on the editorial board of Journal of Veterinary Cardiology, and previously on the editorial boards of CASE (American Society of Echocardiography) and Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine. He has co-authored over 300 scientific publications and book chapters. John is recipient of numerous college awards for teaching as well as the Distinguished Teaching Award from the Ohio State University. Other honors include the Bourgelat award of the BSAVA, Kirk Lifetime Achievement Award from ACVIM, Doctor Honoris Causa from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Faculty Achievement Award of the AAVC, and distinguished Alumnus awards from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine and the Animal Medical Center.
