Overview:
Diagnosing and treating giardiasis in our veterinary patients can be a very intense, thought-provoking exercise! In this case-based presentation, we will discuss and learn more about the pathophysiology of Giardia as it relates to our patients and its prevalence in the environment. We will also talk about different testing options for diagnosing this protozoan parasite and when those should be performed. Finally, we will talk about when treatment should be implemented and what that treatment should entail. You will leave this presentation knowing about the latest innovations and recommendations around Giardia, all while working through a common presentation of a veterinary patient case!

Yoko Nagamori, DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVM (Parasitology)
Dr. Yoko Nagamori is originally from Tokyo, Japan where she earned her first undergraduate degree in Geosciences. She moved to the United States in 2005 and completed another undergraduate degree in Biology at Augustana University, Sioux Falls, SD, followed by studying for her DVM degree at Iowa State University in 2013. Upon graduation she immediately started her parasitology residency program at the National Center for Veterinary Parasitology at Oklahoma State University and completed her training with an MS degree in 2016. Dr. Nagamori became a board-certified Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists in Parasitology in 2017. Before joining Zoetis in 2020, Dr. Nagamori was a Clinical Assistant Professor and Section Head of Parasitology Diagnostic Laboratory at College of Veterinary Medicine, Oklahoma State University in Stillwater OK. In this position she managed the diagnostic laboratory, taught veterinary students and mentored parasitology residents while also presenting oral and poster research abstracts and providing local and regional educational events.

Fred Wininger, VMD, MS, DACVIM (Neurology)
Fred Wininger, VMD, MS, DACVIM (Neurology), originally from New Jersey, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania College of Veterinary Medicine. After completing a small animal rotating internship at the University of Georgia, he finished his neurology/neurosurgery residency at Washington State University. There he developed a love for neuroimaging and the development of a novel neuronavigation device. After joining the faculty at the University of Missouri, he applied these interests to develop therapies for both animals and children with the rare neurodegenerative disorder known as Batten disease (neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis) and was awarded the young investigator award by the Batten Disease Support & Research Association for his work. He then moved to St Louis, Missouri, where he practiced for several years and developed the first hybrid private practice/academic neurology residency program, which continues today.
He currently practices at Charlotte Animal Referral & Emergency in North Carolina. In addition to his clinical and teaching responsibilities, Wininger owns and operates 3D Veterinary Printing, LLC, which creates anatomic models and customized surgical tools to aid veterinary surgeons and neurosurgeons around the world. He also is the founding treasurer of the Veterinary Neurosurgical Society, an active member of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, and adjunct professor for the University of Missouri. In his spare time, Wininger enjoys scuba diving, endurance sports, and exploring new places through their food.
