Diagnosing OA & IA Treatments: A Focus on Synovetin OA

Overview:
This lecture explores the clinical diagnosis of canine osteoarthritis (OA), including the use of physical exams, imaging, and diagnostic tools. It also reviews intra-articular (IA) treatment options, their mechanisms, indications, and evidence for effectiveness in managing canine OA.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the clinical signs and diagnostic criteria for canine osteoarthritis, incorporating physical examination findings and imaging modalities.
- Understand the pharmacologic and biologic intra-articular therapies available for canine OA, including corticosteroids, hyaluronic acid, hydrogels, radiosynoviorthesis, and regenerative products.
- Evaluate the indications, contraindications, and evidence-based outcomes of IA treatments to guide clinical decision-making.
Matthew W. Brunke, DVM Diplomate, ACVSMR (Canine)
Dr. Matthew Brunke grew up in New York City and earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in St. Kitts, graduating in 2004. He is certified in rehabilitation, pain management, acupuncture, and manual therapy. In 2017, Dr. Brunke completed his residency in veterinary sports medicine and rehabilitation, achieving board certification in 2018. As a specialist in veterinary sports medicine and rehabilitation, Dr. Brunke focuses on diagnosing and treating complex mobility disorders—both orthopedic and neurologic. He employs a wide range of advanced therapies, including regenerative medicine such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP), bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC), and stem cell therapy. These modalities are used to treat tendon and ligament injuries, manage arthritis, and address neurologic conditions such as lumbosacral (LS) disease. He also utilizes other injectable therapies and rehabilitation techniques to help restore mobility and reduce pain. Dr. Brunke has a particular passion for caring for active-duty and retired working dogs. He is a founding faculty member of the NorthEast Seminars/NC State CCAT Rehabilitation Program, serves on the scientific review boards of JAVMA and AJVR, and is actively involved in clinical research. In addition, Dr. Brunke serves on the Board of Directors for Paws of Honor, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing veterinary care for retired military and law enforcement K9s. He currently practices at Veterinary Referral Associates (VRA) in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Outside of work, he enjoys running with his dogs and vacationing at the beach.
