Adesola Odunayo, DVM, MS, DACVECC, is the Michael Schaer Endowed Distinguished Professor of Emergency and Critical Care at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. She attended veterinary school at Oklahoma State University (2005) and completed a rotating internship at Hollywood Animal Hospital in Hollywood, Florida. She then completed an emergency and critical care internship at the Animal Emergency Center in Glendale, Wisconsin, and a residency in emergency and critical care at the University of Missouri (2010). Her clinical interests are diverse, but the absolute favorite part of her job is being by her patients’ bedside. She also enjoys research studies that answer practical clinical questions and has a focus in acid suppression and venous access. Outside of work, she is drawn to culinary adventures and traveling the world.
Overview:
Hypoglycemia is a potentially life-threatening condition with a wide range of underlying causes in veterinary patients. This interactive, case-based presentation will guide attendees through the diagnostic reasoning and clinical management of hypoglycemic patients, with a focus on practical, real-world scenarios encountered in small animal practice.
Through a series of illustrative cases, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how to approach hypoglycemia systematically. The session will highlight the importance of evaluating for underlying endocrine disorders, such as hypoadrenocorticism, explore the physiological impact of anorexia on glucose regulation, and review the diagnostic tools available to identify sepsis in hypoglycemic patients. Attendees will leave with enhanced confidence in selecting appropriate diagnostic tests and initiating targeted treatments based on clinical findings.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the rationale for testing for hypoadrenocorticism in hypoglycemic patients.
- Explore the impact of anorexia on the development and progression of hypoglycemia.
- Understand the diagnostic tests used to identify sepsis in hypoglycemic patients.
