CIV: What use is a vaccine in the midst of an outbreak?

Overview:
The lecture will start with a brief review of the history of the 2 major influenza viruses of dogs as well as a presentation of the major clinical signs. Data from experimentally infected dogs will be reviewed. Data from cats showing protection against feline herpesvirus 1 after 1 dose of an inactivated vaccine will be used to set the stage for the discussion of a study just completed in dogs challenged with H3N2 on Day 7. Overall recommendations for managing new CIRDC outbreaks will be discussed.

Michael R. Lappin, DVM, PhD, DACVIM
Dr. Lappin graduated from Oklahoma State University and then completed an internship, internal medicine residency, and PhD program in Parasitology at the University of Georgia. Dr. Lappin is the Kenneth W. Smith Professor in Small Animal Clinical Veterinary Medicine at Colorado State University and is the director of the “Center for Companion Animal Studies”. The Center is housed in the Translational Medicine Institute at CSU. Dr. Lappin is the chair of the WSAVA One Health Committee. His principal areas of interest are prevention of infectious diseases, the upper respiratory disease complex, infectious causes of fever, infectious causes of diarrhea, and zoonoses.
