Avoid These Dermatology Case Pitfalls and Succeed! A Case-based Approach

Overview:

Multiple real-world challenging dermatology cases will be presented. Some straightforward, some with a “twist”, to show how avoiding common dermatologic pitfalls and customizing an individualized diagnostic and treatment plan for each case leads to the best outcomes for allergic dermatitis patients and their owners. This presentation will show how a dermatology specialist works up cases step-by-step that can be applied to a general practitioner’s own pruritic canine patients.

Learning Objectives:

Gain confidence applying dermatologic diagnostics (cytology, skin scrapings, etc.)
Recognizing lesion distribution and appearance that may affect differential diagnoses
Understanding how to appropriately use antipruritics during the workup and long-term relief

Ashley Bourgeois DVM, DACVD

Ashley Bourgeois, DVM, DACVD, completed her bachelor’s degree at Iowa State University and graduated from the University of Missouri’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2010. She then completed a small animal internship at Purdue University. Upon finishing her internship, she accepted a residency position with the Animal Dermatology Clinic’s Tustin, California, location in 2011. She became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology in 2014. Bourgeois moved to Portland, Oregon, in 2016 to help expand the company. She is an owner within the company and on the board of directors. She has a strong interest in autoimmune skin diseases, allergies, and otology. In her leisure, Bourgeois enjoys outdoor activities, traveling, and watching sports. She and her husband stay busy with their daughter, their son, and their rescue terrier mix. Bourgeois is passionate about educating veterinarians in dermatology and work-life management through her podcast and social media presence (the Derm Vet).

Adam Christman, DVM, MBA

Adam Christman, DVM, MBA, is the chief veterinary officer for dvm360®—an MJH Life Sciences Company™—who oversees content strategy and development and is the brand voice and personality for dvm360®’s multimedia channels. He loves to engage with fellow pet parents and veterinary professionals across social media. Christman is an advocate of Pride VMC and Pawsibilities. He is also the proud dog dad to 4 dachshunds and believes no one should be deprived of the incredible human-animal bond.
