Addressing the National LGBTQ+ Crisis in the Veterinary Profession
1.0 CE Credit Hour / Veterinarians & Veterinary Technicians
Overview:
A relentlessly shifting framework of attacks on LGBTQ+ rights in the United States over the past 12 months has in many cases overwhelmed the support systems already in place. One year ago, we were concerned about Don’t Say Gay, the potential of parents losing parental rights and being arrested for supporting transgender children and sports bans. As of June 2023, we’ll over 500 bills have been introduced in the United States that challenge access to healthcare, access to gender affirming care, gender expression, drag performances restroom use, books, lesson plans and DEI education to name a few. In this panel we will discuss these challenges, their personal impacts, the LGBTQ+ refugee crisis and steps to address safety for individuals in the community.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand current legislative challenges to LGBTQ+ rights
- Understand how this might affect LGBTQ+ workers in veterinary medicine
- Discuss potential solutions to these problems.
