A Total Wound Care Approach: Improving the Physical and Emotional Health of Patients

Overview:
In this 1-hour RACE-approved lecture, attendees will start with a refresher on the pathophysiology around wound healing in dogs and cats. This will include both gross and microscopic descriptions. Attendees will then discuss different pain points around treating wounds with a heavy focus on fear, anxiety, and stress in both patients and clients. This moves into physical factors that impede wound healing (immune suppression, inflammation, etc.) Understanding what creates an ideal healing environment takes attendees towards an introduction to a new standard of wound care that considers our patients' physical and emotional health. The final section of the lecture will include case-based discussions with strategies for general and emergency practices around workflow implementation and client communication.

Dr. Natalie Marks
Dr. Marks is a small animal veterinarian with nearly 25 years of clinical experience in general practice, with a majority of that in practice ownership in Chicago, IL, her homebase. She is a sought-after educator and KOL both nationally, and internationally, and has received many awards including America's Favorite Veterinarian from the American Veterinary Medical Foundation and Nobivac Veterinarian of the Year for her work on canine influenza. She is a columnist for the Fountain Report and Today's Veterinary Business, as well as a clinical consultant for DVM360. Finally, she is the CEO and co-owner of VANE, the Veterinary Angel Network of Entrepeneurs, where members provide direction, connection, and capital funding for animal health start-up companies bringing innovation forward. Most important, she's a mom of three amazing humans and a ruthless softball coach.
