A Practical Guide to Managing Osteoarthritis: Making Sense of Current Therapies

Overview:
This session will explore the importance of osteoarthritis management in veterinary patients. This session will also discuss the evidence for the use of current therapies to treat pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis with a focus on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and therapeutic nutrition. Attendees will learn protocols for OA management that can be instituted in everyday practice.

Bryan T. Torres, DVM, PhD, DACVS (Small Animal), DACVSMR
Dr. Torres is an assistant professor of small animal orthopedic surgery and director of the Motion Analysis Laboratory at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. He is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) and the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR). Dr. Torres received his BS from Clemson University and his DVM from the University of Georgia (UGA). After graduation, he stayed at UGA for a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery. Following his internship, he worked for several years as a small animal practitioner in the Atlanta area. Dr. Torres then returned to UGA to complete a postdoctoral research fellowship focused on gait analysis, musculoskeletal biomechanics, and osteoarthritis. He stayed at UGA for a small animal surgical residency followed by a PhD in physiology. Dr. Torres has research interests in gait and motion analysis, musculoskeletal and joint biomechanics, sports medicine and rehabilitation, and osteoarthritis and pain management
Catherine Ruggiero, MS, DVM, DACVIM (Nutrition)
Dr. Catherine Ruggiero is a board certified veterinary nutritionist® and manager of Scientific Communications at Hill's US. She completed her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine training at the University of Missouri in 2014. Prior to that, she received a Bachelor of Science at St. Lawrence University and a Master of Science in Biological Sciences at Fordham University. She was an associate veterinarian at a small animal veterinary practice in Upstate New York for just over three years before returning to the University of Missouri to pursue residency training in small animal clinical nutrition. Upon completion of an ACVN residency program in 2019, Dr. Ruggiero joined Hill's Pet Nutrition.

Christman is a national thought leader, speaker and author on practice management, social media, and rehabilitation, and co-authored, Honey, Have You Squeezed the Dachshund? A Pet Owner’s Guide for Owners Who Are Terrified of IVDD—a book on dogs with disabilities. He has been featured in multiple publications and appeared on various multimedia shows throughout the country sharing his expertise and passion on all things veterinary medicine.
As an avid social media influencer for animal health care, he has over 800K followers on TikTok and 53K followers on Instagram. He loves to engage with fellow pet parents and veterinary professionals across social media. Christman is an advocate of Pride VMC and Pawsibilities. He is also the proud dog dad to 4 dachshunds and believes no one should be deprived of the incredible human-animal bond.
