A comparative look at pet food formats: Making informed choices for our pets

1.0 CE Credit Hour / Veterinarians & Veterinary Technicians

Overview:

This presentation explores the evolving landscape of pet food formats, comparing the nutritional profiles and impacts of dry kibble, wet food, treats, supplements, and fresh food options. Nolan Frantz, PhD, MS, a leading expert in companion animal nutrition with extensive industry experience, will present data from 2 original studies comparing extruded kibble to fresh and human-grade diets in beagles. These studies investigated the effects of different food formats on fecal characteristics, microbiome composition, serum profiles, hematology, gene expression, and skin/coat health. Additionally, the presentation will discuss the pros and cons of each pet food format, considering factors such as cost, convenience, palatability, nutritional content, and long-term health implications. Further research is needed to fully understand the long-term effects of different pet food formats on canine health and to identify the key drivers of any health implications. The presentation concludes with a discussion of the significant growth of the pet food industry and the increasing consumer demand for fresh and human-grade options.

Learning Objectives:

  • Compare and contrast the nutritional profiles and health impacts of various pet food formats (kibble, wet food, fresh food, treats, supplements). This objective focuses on understanding the key differences in nutrient composition and potential effects on canine health across different food types.
  • Analyze the results of original research comparing extruded kibble to fresh and human-grade diets in beagles. This objective emphasizes critical thinking and data interpretation skills, focusing on the specific findings of the presented studies and their implications.
  • Evaluate the factors influencing consumer choices in the pet food market, including cost, convenience, palatability, and health concerns. This objective encourages a broader understanding of the market dynamics
